Fabric Care Guide – Avilasa Sarees
At Avilasa Sarees, we want your beautiful sarees and ethnic wear to stay vibrant and in excellent condition for years to come. Different fabrics require different care, so we’ve put together this simple, practical guide to help you look after your garments the right way.
1. General Fabric Care Tips
Handle with love:
Delicate fabrics like silk, chiffon, georgette, and organza need gentle handling. Avoid pulling or stretching fabric edges or embellishments.
Avoid direct sunlight:
When drying or storing, keep your sarees away from direct sun exposure to prevent colors from fading.
Fold carefully:
For fabrics with zari, sequins, or embroidery, fold along non-embellished lines to reduce wear and tear.
2. Washing Instructions by Fabric
Silk Sarees
✔ Prefer dry cleaning for all pure silk sarees.
✔ If hand-washing at home, use cold water and a mild detergent.
✔ Do not scrub or wring silk.
✔ Air-dry in shade.
✔ Iron on low heat with a protective cloth.
Why? Silk threads and zari can be damaged by harsh detergents and strong scrubbing.
Cotton & Handloom Sarees
✔ Hand-wash gently in cold water.
✔ Use mild detergent.
✔ Soak for short periods only.
✔ Rinse thoroughly.
✔ Air-dry in shade.
✔ Iron while the fabric is slightly damp for smooth results.
Why? Cotton and handloom fabrics can lose softness and color if washed too harshly.
Chiffon, Georgette & Net
✔ Hand-wash separately in cold water.
✔ Use mild detergent.
✔ Do not twist or wring the fabric.
✔ Lay flat or hang to dry in shade.
✔ Iron on low heat with protective cloth.
Why? These lightweight fabrics are delicate and can snag easily.
Crepe & Rayon
✔ Hand-wash in cold water with mild detergent.
✔ Gently squeeze out water.
✔ Dry in shade.
✔ Iron on low heat.
Why? Crepe and rayon lose shape if handled roughly or dried in direct sun.
3. Zari, Embroidery, & Embellished Garments
- Always turn the saree inside out before washing.
- Avoid rubbing embellishments.
- Better to dry clean these garments.
- Store separately in muslin or cotton cloth to avoid snagging.
4. Drying Tips
✔ Always dry in shade, not under direct sunlight.
✔ Hang sarees from the fabric edge, not embellishments.
✔ For fabrics that stretch, dry flat to maintain shape.
5. Ironing Tips
✔ Use low to medium heat settings.
✔ Iron on the reverse side to protect prints and embroidery.
✔ Place a soft cloth between the iron and fabric (especially for silk and synthetic blends).
6. Stain Removal (Quick Tips)
For light stains:
- Blot gently with cold water.
- Avoid rubbing up and down to prevent spreading.
For tough stains (grease, makeup):
- Immediately consult a professional dry cleaner.
- Do not apply strong chemicals without testing.
Tip: Quick action often prevents permanent marks.
7. Storage & Long-Term Care
✔ Fold sarees neatly and wrap them in cotton or muslin cloth.
✔ Avoid plastic covers — they can trap moisture and cause mildew.
✔ For silk sarees, refold periodically to avoid permanent crease lines.
✔ Add a silica gel or natural neem leaf sachet to keep away moisture and insects.
8. Travel Care
✔ Use soft fabric garment bags for travel.
✔ Avoid tight stuffing, especially with zari or embellishments.
✔ For long journeys, fold carefully and place between layers of cotton cloth.
9. Perfume & Accessories Tips
- Do not spray perfume directly on your saree — spray it on your body first.
- Be cautious with heavy jewelry — it can snag delicate fabrics.
10. If You’re Unsure…
When in doubt, especially with silk and heavily embellished products from Avilasa Sarees, it’s always best to go for professional dry cleaning. This ensures your special garments stay in the best condition.
